Really?

As much as one can design for money, sometimes it's using that talent for someone or some group that truly needs the artwork is what can make design exceptional.

Design is one of the few talents where things are created either from a few resources or nothing but the imagination of the artist.

Because Sometimes You Can't Put a Price on Things

The Mission Chamber Orchestra approached me some time ago to design their website. In the process, I suggested they begin offering their concerts online and use paypal as a medium to pay for ticket-sales. Traditionally, they used phone, mail-in, and box-office styles of sales and said the idea might have some resistance with the board members, but they'd be willing to give it a try.

As soon as the new website went live, the first concert was sold out and over booked.

I've chosen to do work for non-profits in the past because it's allowed me to use design to positively impact the lives of others for reasons other than a paycheck.
